Kasper Schmeichel has been named in the SPFL Team of the Week after his crucial save helped Celtic defeat Rangers in a dramatic penalty shootout to lift the Premier Sports Cup.

The veteran Danish goalkeeper’s heroics were pivotal in sealing the silverware for Brendan Rodgers’ side after an enthralling 3-3 draw at Hampden Park.
He pulled off some great saves, too, throughout the game, keeping Celtic in the tie.
With the pressure mounting in the penalty shootout, Schmeichel produced a crucial stop to deny Ridvan Yilmaz’s low effort, giving Celtic the advantage. His composure under pressure allowed Daizen Maeda to convert the winning penalty and seal the trophy for the Hoops.
Schmeichel’s experience and coolness shone through. His performance capped off an excellent display, reinforcing his importance to the team since his arrival.
The SPFL’s weekly recognition honours standout players across Scottish football, and Schmeichel’s inclusion is down to his match-winning contribution.

This accolade is well-deserved for a goalkeeper who has brought a wealth of experience and quality to Celtic’s backline. With Brendan Rodgers confirming that the club has the option to extend Schmeichel’s contract by a further year, performances like these could make that decision a straightforward one. His current deal is set to expire in the summer.
