Kasper Schmeichel has shared his thoughts following Celtic’s last-gasp Champions League exit at the hands of Bayern Munich.

The experienced goalkeeper was outstanding on the night, making several crucial saves to keep Brendan Rodgers’ side in contention. However, despite his efforts, Alphonso Davies’ 94th-minute goal denied the Hoops a famous victory and a place in the last 16.
Taking to Instagram the morning after the match, Schmeichel reflected on the performance and the cruel nature of football:
“Fought for everything last night—it just wasn’t to be. Football can be cruel sometimes, but I’m very proud of the boys and honoured to wear the shirt. Thank you for the incredible support, as always.”

Schmeichel’s performance was one of his best in a Celtic shirt so far, with the Dane pulling off a string of top saves to frustrate Bayern’s attack. He denied Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, and Leroy Sané with crucial interventions and commanded his box well throughout the 90 minutes.
Even when Bayern’s goal went in, he was straight back to his feet and rallying his teammates, but there wasn’t enough time for an equaliser.
Despite the heartbreaking ending, the 37-year-old has quickly established himself as a leader in this Celtic side. His experience and quality were clear to see, and his performance in Munich only further underlined his importance to the squad as they now turn their focus back to domestic football.
He’ll hopefully get another crack at the Champions League next season after he signed his contract extension.
