Kasper Schmeichel Stunned by Celtic’s Champions League Atmosphere: “The Perfect Start!”

Kasper Schmeichel took to Instagram on Thursday morning to reflect on Celtic’s 5-1 victory over Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League, with a particular focus on the unforgettable atmosphere at Celtic Park.

The Danish goalkeeper, who made his European debut for the Hoops, couldn’t hide his excitement about finally experiencing a Champions League night in Glasgow.

In his post, Schmeichel wrote: “Waited nearly 8 years to hear that anthem again! What an incredible atmosphere, unlike anything I’ve ever heard in my life! The perfect start to our @championsleague campaign.” For someone with his wealth of experience in football, having played at the highest levels and massive arenas, this was high praise for Celtic fans.

It’s been a tough decade for Celtic in Europe, even with the famously passionate home support. Results haven’t always gone the Hoops’ way at Parkhead, where they once regularly toppled giants. However, Schmeichel’s comments signal that the energy inside the stadium is as fierce as ever, and perhaps, with such a start to the campaign, the club might be ready to reclaim their status as a European force at home.

Schmeichel’s excitement was palpable as he savoured every moment of his Champions League return, particularly the roar of the Celtic fans as they drowned out the anthem before kickoff. That special connection between the supporters and the team was on full display, with the noise levels clearly leaving a lasting impression on the 37-year-old keeper.

There are much tougher games ahead but there was a time when Celtic would conspire to find a way to lose against teams they should have beaten. Blowing away Slovan Bratislava was a statement, any way you slice it.
