Kasper Schmeichel, still riding the high of his Premier League title won with Leicester City, appears to be thriving in his new role at Celtic.
After helping Leicester achieve an astonishing league title win in the 2015/16 season, Schmeichel initially struggled to find his footing after leaving the King Power Stadium. However, he seems to have found a new home in Glasgow with the reigning Scottish champions.
Schmeichel Rediscovering Leicester Form
Winning a Championship title, Premier League, FA Cup and FA Community Shield during his impressive 11 years in the East Midlands at Leicester, Schmeichel will go down as one of the club’s greatest players. Starting his professional career at Manchester City, who are 13/10 in the Premier League winner odds this season, Schmeichel moved on from the Eithad Stadium to have permanent moves with clubs like Notts County and Leeds United. Snapped up by Leicester, who are 50/1 in the football tips to finish in the top half of the Premier League table this season, Schmeichel’s move to the Foxes in 2011 proved to be the best decision of his career so far.
Moving to Parkhead could be another turning point for Schmeichel and his representatives, after forgettable spells at Nice and Anderlecht. Having just one season in France and Belgium respectively, Schmeichel jumped at the opportunity to join Celtic and penned a one-year deal back in July with the option of a further 12 months. With the Hoops conceding just three goals in their first nine Premiership games of the season, the move to Parkhead is proving to be a good fit for both Schmeichel and the club.
Schmeichel Key to Celtic’s Silverware Ambitions
A strong defence is often crucial to winning titles, and Celtic’s defence, now bolstered by Schmeichel, has emerged as one of the Premiership’s toughest. Even at 37, Schmeichel has shown he remains to be highly capable and seems to be working well under manager Brendan Rodgers at Parkhead.
The Hoops are poised for another successful Premiership campaign, and they’re also aiming to make an impact in the in Europe in the Champions League. Their campaign began with a solid win over Slovan Bratislava, though they faced a setback after a heavy away defeat to Borussia Dortmund. Schmeichel and his defence responded with an impressive goalless draw at Atalanta – a performance that Schmeichel, visibly proud at the final whistle, will surely draw confidence from moving forward.
Winning silverware is what Celtic is founded on, and Schmeichel, with his wealth of experience and competitive spirit, understands the demands. The Danish shot-stopper might be in the later stages of his career, but he seems rejuvenated at Parkhead and might well be with the Hoops for many years to come.
