Jota Injury Timeline Update

Brendan Rodgers has poured cold water on any suggestion that Jota could make an early return to action, confirming the winger remains on the long road back from a serious knee injury.

The former Benfica man suffered an ACL rupture during Celtic’s 5-0 win over Dundee United at Tannadice in April, ruling him out until 2026. He has since returned to his homeland to focus on rehab with his family and medical team.

Jota paid a visit to his Celtic teammates at their Lisbon training camp earlier this week, appearing upbeat as he mingled with the squad. However, any optimism over a quick comeback has been swiftly quashed by the Irishman.

Rodgers stressed that while the 26-year-old is making steady progress, the timeline for a return remains unchanged and patience will be key in the months ahead.

He said: (RecordSport), “Yes, he’s coming along really well. I think we obviously sent him back to assess his fitness here and be with his family.

“And yes, the progress has come along really well.

“I think the first 12 weeks of that injury, it’s important that you get to a point where you can, in the nine to 12 weeks, that you’re able to straighten it.

“So he can do that. He was in the gym. So yes, he’s coming along well. Long, long way to go. But it’s good to see him.”

Celtic will now plan for the upcoming campaign without Jota, whose absence leaves a void on the left flank. The club have already been active in the transfer market to strengthen the wide areas, but Jota’s creativity and goal threat will be difficult to replicate.

The injury is a cruel blow for a player who had been growing into one of Celtic’s key performers under Rodgers, particularly in big games. His knack for producing moments of magic in tight matches will be sorely missed.

Jota’s presence in Portugal this week gave the squad a morale boost, but the focus now shifts to ensuring his long-term recovery is not rushed. The club will continue to monitor his rehab closely as he works toward a 2026 return.

Rodgers’ comments make it clear there will be no shortcuts. The focus is on Jota’s full recovery rather than gambling on a premature return that could jeopardise his future fitness.
