Celtic interim boss John Kennedy has reserved praise for young left-back Adam Montgomery after making his debut on Wednesday night in the Hoops 4-0 win over St Johnstone.
As quoted by SportsMole, Kennedy revealed that the youngster was unlucky not to make his debut, before last nights fixture having trained with the first team for a few months now. However, he expressed his delight at Montgomery’s performance and claimed there are high hopes for him going forward.
“He (Montgomery) was probably a bit unfortunate not to play before now,” Kennedy said. “He has been in and around the first team for the last five or six months training with us.
“With young players, we offer them the chance to train and he made an impression and after a week or two you could see he could handle it, he was getting better, so we kept him around as much as we possibly could.
“I have been there myself as a young player, you need the opportunity and you could just see he was good to go.
“The difficult thing is with the Covid situation, he hasn’t played any games, so even being up to rhythm in the reserves and being match fit. We knew he would only last about 60 minutes but it was a great start for him. We have high hopes for him.”
It was an impressive first display from the 18-year old who signed a new 4-year deal in February with many fans also giving him heavy praise for his performance against the Scottish Cup finalists.
With how the season has gone, you would have hoped to have seen younger players such as Montgomery get more of a chance in the side with not much to play for.
After last nights performance, you would hope he can keep his place in the side for Easter Road on Saturday in what potentially could be a tougher task.
If he can build on his debut performance going forward, he will certainly have a big future at the club.
