John Hartson Questions Celtic Star’s Attitude

Former Celtic striker John Hartson has questioned the attitude of one Hoops player, who the Welshman believes did not seem motivated to come off the bench and make an impact.

With Brendan Rodgers making two changes at half-time, it wouldn’t be until later in the second half that he would make the final three substitutions, and this is where Hartson has an issue.

Rodgers looked to change the game; however, it didn’t materialise, and it has frustrated Hartson—not by Rodgers’ mistakes, but by one star who, in the Welshman’s eyes, failed to make an impact.

Hartson said: (Go Radio Football Show), “He (Brendan Rodgers) doesn’t normally (play Maeda and Idah together). Brendan’s formation doesn’t change a lot. Sometimes when he is chasing a game.

“I thought Idah come on and I thought he was poor. I think he needs to do more. He comes on, and he has to get a grip of it. He has to be a bit more of a leader. Get it into me. Give me the ball. Get it wide.

“It’s almost like he comes on, and I just thought he went through the motions. And I like Adam Idah. I think he has something to his game.

“But, against St Johnstone, it’s almost like he comes on and it’s like he just comes on. You have to want to come on. A better attitude to make an impact in the game.”

Idah failed to make the impact that he so often did last season on Sunday. The Irish striker could have had a goal and an assist if not for a poor miss from James Forrest and a lack of clinical finishing from himself.

For Hartson, however, Idah hasn’t shown the desire he believes a Celtic striker, especially one not starting, should. It’s hard to argue that Idah’s form hasn’t dipped in recent months. He’s a player that divides opinion—some believe he will never become Celtic’s main striker, while others can see the potential he has. That’s the issue for Rodgers. Having reportedly paid £9 million for Idah in the summer, he hasn’t become a regular starter, and that frustrates Hartson.

However, until Sunday, Daizen Maeda has been in the form of his life up top. If Idah wants to become Celtic’s undisputed striker, he has to step up. When given opportunities this season, he has failed to deliver consistently, especially considering Kyogo’s departure in January. It seemed like Idah was finally ready to take the next step, but that hasn’t materialised.
