JOHN HARTSON has said he fears this season’s SFPL title could be decided by poor refereeing decisions.
There has been a lot of interest in refereeing decisions since Celtic went top of the league in February. If Celtic get a suspect throw-in, it feels like everyone in Scottish football with vested interests elsewhere wants to put it under the microscope – while ignoring other decisions.
Let’s get this right, the standard of refereeing in this country is abysmal.
The people moaning about Celtic, in particular, are the ones who have the most to lose.
John believes the title race could come down to an official, as quoted by SunSport.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if the season was decided by refereeing decisions. I think we all have to get prepared for that. I’ve had it myself, two goals disallowed against Rangers, when I was three yards onside in the 2003 League Cup final.”
The former Celtic striker went on to say there’s tit for tat going on but pointed out the discrepancy between what gets called out – especially from last weekend’s round of fixtures.
“It’s like everybody’s going on about, ‘Celtic, they’ve got the referee again’.
“But I also think that there is a foul in the build-up to Rangers’ goal against Aberdeen.
“Jim Goodwin said it, there was a foul by Calvin Bassey on Calvin Ramsay, and they go and score.
“It’s tit for tat. Get the decisions right and there is none of this going at each other and arguing.”
Celtic are top of the table by three points, the season could come down to fine margins and with two Glasgow derbies still to play, we have to hope referees can do their job.
VAR has been touted in Scottish football, but with the same people now running it, I have little hope it can be a difference maker.
