Iwata’s Preferred Position

Tomoki Iwata, the versatile Japanese international, is eager to make his mark at Celtic under new manager Brendan Rodgers.

The 26-year-old, who was brought to the club in January by former manager Ange Postecoglou, is using the pre-season to showcase his abilities and secure a regular spot in the team.

Iwata, who arrived at Celtic on an initial six-month loan deal that was later made permanent, has been used primarily as a substitute. Towards the end of last season, he found himself playing as a centre-back, a position he adapted to with aplomb.

During Celtic’s most recent match against his former side Yokohama F. Marinos, he played in the right back position, with Ralson and Johnston both injured.

Despite his versatility, Iwata has expressed a desire to play in midfield, a role he believes suits his strengths. Speaking about his ambitions for the upcoming season, Iwata said: [Hochi News]

“I was able to make some good decisions as I remembered, but I still need to improve my technique and physical fitness.

“I want to play in midfield but at the same time, I think that’s my strength. I can play in the midfield or with the centre-backs.

“I want to use this chance to show that I can do more. The first thing I want to do is to play in games.”

Having been named the J-League’s MVP last season, he is now entering the prime of his career aged 26. His versatility and ambition to improve and contribute more to the team could make him a valuable asset for Celtic under Rodgers’ management.
