‘It’s no secret’ – Celtic Defender Paves Way for Parkhead Exit

Gustaf Lagerbielke’s stint at Celtic looks increasingly likely to end this summer, with the Swedish defender expressing his desire for regular playing time and confirming interest from clubs in Italy and other leagues.

Lecce, who previously attempted to sign Lagerbielke, are reportedly preparing another bid, while Serie B side Frosinone have also entered the race for his signature.

Since his arrival from Elfsborg last summer, Lagerbielke has struggled to cement a place in Brendan Rodgers’ squad. Despite his reputation as Sweden’s Defender of the Year, the 24-year-old has made just nine appearances for the Hoops.

Reflecting on his time at Celtic and addressing the transfer speculation, Lagerbielke told Footballskanlen, “There are interested teams in Italy and other leagues. I think I’ll take a lot from Celtic to the next team I join. It’s difficult to say anything before something is ready, I have a contract at Celtic but it’s no secret that I want to play.”

Lagerbielke was brought in alongside Maik Nawrocki to bolster Celtic’s defensive options, but neither has managed to become a regular starter. The January transfer window almost saw Lagerbielke depart Parkhead, but an injury to key defender Cameron Carter-Vickers meant he stayed to provide squad depth.

For Celtic, offloading Lagerbielke could be a sensible move. It would free up space in the squad and potentially allow the club to recoup some of their investment. Rodgers’ plans to reshape the team for the new season would benefit from resolving Lagerbielke’s situation.

The coming weeks will be crucial in determining Lagerbielke’s future. A transfer would provide the Swedish defender with the regular playing time he desires and enable Celtic to focus on their recruitment.
