Rather surprisingly, Adam Montgomery was not included in the Scotland under 21s squad for what turned out to be two defeats to Sweden and Wales this month.
The Celtic academy graduate, who is currently on loan at St. Johnstone, has been a regular fixture in Scot Gemmill’s side in recent months although was omitted this time around, much to the disappointment of Saints boss Callum Davidson who told The Courier:
“It’s disappointing adam Montgomery wasn’t called up for the under 21s”
“That was disappointing for him because he’s fit and will be back for us against aberdeen this weekend”
For both Montgomery and his manager, his lack of international involvement this March was disheartening however that did not prevent Davidson from singing the praises of the young defender:
“His performances this season have been really good. he’s been one of our best players”
“The improvement in him over the course of the last six or seven months has been massive”
For St. Johnstone in 2022/23, the 20 year old has made 24 appearances in all competitions, netting one goal and assisting three in the process. He has been a greatly reliable outlet for the Perth side this campaign and the praise he has recently received from his manager has been deserved yet unexpected.
Furthermore, the fact Davidson drew attention to the recent progress Montgomery has made is hugely positive as the sole purpose of a loan is for a player to go and develop and evidently, the youngster is doing exactly that.
Davidson went on to speak about Montgomery’s individual qualities:
“He has created lots of goals for us this season and has improved on the defensive side of his game as well”
“He’s strong, he’s quick, athletic and willing to learn. he’s someone I enjoy working with”
When Montgomery returns to Celtic this summer, it will be intriguing to see if he may challenge for a place in the first team.
The Scot gained several minutes at the beginning of Ange Postecoglou’s tenure, indeed assisting Jota away at Aberdeen in a turning point victory back in 2021, however Greg Taylor’s emergence combined with Liam Scales arrival made it difficult for him to make headway.
Nevertheless following a solid season out on loan at a Premiership side where he’s assuredly progressed, one wonders if Montgomery will make a mark at Parkhead next season.
