Matt O’Riley’s transfer from Celtic to Brighton has set a new record fee.

As the 23-year-old midfielder signs a five-year deal with the Premier League side, with the option of another, the move marks a significant step in his career, but Chris Sutton has questioned the move to Brighton, who have no European football this season.
Sutton gave his take on O’Riley’s departure, suggesting that while the move is a step up in league terms, it represents a step down in club magnitude.
Speaking on BBC radio, Sutton commended O’Riley’s professional conduct during the transfer saga, commending him for not agitating for a move away from Celtic, unlike some players who might push for transfers.
“He’s downgrading. Club size, absolutely downgrading. Do you know what, though?
“He’s conducted himself superbly well. Hasn’t been one of those players who’s thrown his toys out of the pram demanding a move. Brilliant player for Celtic.
“Celtic are going to miss him, but they have to compete in the Champions League this season and they need new signings. Is Matt O’Riley irreplaceable?
“I think he is. He is that good. Great signing for Brighton, though.”
Personally, I take a different stance from Sutton. I think it’s a great move for O’Riley’s career. He’s at a club who have a specific model and play great, attacking football. They’ll likely finish in a European spot this season, and O’Riley will be in the spotlight in the Premier League in a side a lot of top teams watch the poach talent from.
