Celtic fans know how important depth is through the middle of the team, especially at the back. With players picking up knocks and a busy schedule ahead, strong cover at centre‑half is key.
Walker praised the recent showing from Cameron Carter‑Vickers and Liam Scales, pointing to their part in a solid defensive display. Still, he’s curious to see what Simpson‑Pusey can bring, especially when it comes to playing out from the back and breaking lines.
His point is simple, Celtic need both strong defenders and players who are good on the ball. That balance might come from trusted names or new signings pushing their way in.
He said: (Go Radio Football Show), “I know Carter-Vickers had a few injury problems.
“I am positive the boy is a right-sider. I think that’s maybe an area Celtic have looked at.
“To be fair, I thought Carter-Vickers and Scales did very well at the weekend. They defended their one-v-one very well. It’s interesting, the young man is saying that, ‘it’s his qualities on the ball.’ I still like seeing good defenders. I keep saying that. I like the defenders.
“Yes, we want them on the ball, and the way Celtic play. Playing between the lines quickly, getting forward and creating chances. We all want that.
“It’s going to be interesting. You do need the players throughout the season. You have got Scales, Trusty, and you have got Carter-Vickers. You have got to try and keep them fit.”
Walker’s comments make it clear that while Simpson Pusey has good qualities, especially on the ball and linking play, he won’t walk into the team ahead of the regulars. Carter Vickers, Scales and Trusty are still the main men at the back, with solid displays and plenty of experience.
Keeping that core group fit will be key for the coaching staff. As Walker pointed out, injuries can change things quickly and new signings need to be ready to slot in without upsetting the defence.

Bringing in Simpson Pusey shows Celtic are planning ahead. He’s comfortable with the ball and fits how the team want to play, but it doesn’t mean they’ll sacrifice defensive strength.
Going forward, fans should expect to see Simpson Pusey used smartly alongside the senior defenders. As Walker put it, having a mix of strong defending, passing ability and squad depth will be crucial if Celtic are to hit their targets this season.
