We’ve all seen that famous picture of Billy McNeill holding the European Cup aloft in 1967.
However, a lesser known image came to our attention this week from the Estadio Nacional back when the bhoys were on the brink of history.
The Lisbon lions standing on the very platform Billy McNeill would ascend 24 hours before the game. On the eve of Celtic’s greatest ever achievement, the team look relaxed and stood on the balcony of the stadium in Lisbon, looking onto the pitch.

Inter Milan were in town looking to stop Jock Stein’s Celtic in their tracks but as we know, the beautiful, inventive football on display that night in Lisbon won the day and the legendary trophy.
It’s a shame the whole team did not go up with Billy to receive the trophy at the time, images of the squad standing proud on the balcony would’ve been special.
The iconic images of the whole team celebrating back in Glasgow are still something to behold. As the years pass by, the Lisbon Lions are still known by Celtic fans the world over, there are many who are not with us anymore but they’re truly immortal.
