There have been many players that have been brought into Celtic over the past few years who have been questionable signings. The most obvious would be Marvin Compper but there’s another guy who has still got a long way to go on his contract that’s currently out of sight so inevitably out of mind.
Kundai Benyu came in as a project for Brendan Rodgers back in 2017 when the bhoys snapped him up from Ipswich Town. The idea was to loan him straight back out but Brendan Rodgers had a change of heart and kept the player at the club for six months to assess him. After a couple of energetic appearances and a disastrous half against Kilmarnock in the league Cup, Kundai was never seen again in the Celtic first team. Loaned out the following January to Oldham, Kundai would surely get game time in the lower leagues down south but he only amassed five appearances and spent most of his time in the stands.
He returned to the club last summer where Benyu sat again for six months, playing in some developmental games but not getting a sniff at the first team. At the end of January, it was announced the player was heading to Sweden with Helsingborgs IF on a year long loan. Since that move and the kick off of the Swedish season at the end of March, there’s again not much to report. Here are some bullet points detailing Kundai’s current situation.
- Made five appearances for Helsingborg out of a possible twelve.
- Only played 186 minutes of competitive football since joining.
- 1 assist to his name.
- Not been in the squad since the end of April.
- Played 14 competitive games across Celtic, Oldham and Helsingborg since 2017.
- Contracted to Celtic until 2021
There is no word what his current situation is with being out of the team. We would assume injury but there’s nothing pointing in that direction. We’ve contacted Helsingborg for comment on the Celtic loan player to get to the bottom of this particular loan mystery.
It’s safe to say the midfielder doesn’t have a future at Celtic beyond his current deal at the moment.
