MIKEY JOHNSTON is heading back to Celtic this summer with his future at the club very much in the balance.
The 24-year-old has had a good season in Portugal and has stayed relatively injury free.
Unless something changes; Mikey will rejoin the Celtic squad when they reassemble for pre-season and the trio to Japan and Korea.
Mikey has been on the periphery of the first team squad for a long time now and every time he looked to be making an impact he would get injured.
Speaking to the Sunday Mail Mikey made it clear nothing has been decided to this point and he hopes to be at Celtic next season: “What happens next season isn’t really down to me. I’ve given it everything I’ve got over here and I’ve enjoyed it.
“But if I can go back to Celtic and play, that’s definitely something I want to do. I’m 24 and this is the most games I’ve played in a season. I want to build on that, not go back the way.
“I’d love to play for Celtic next season but we’ll have to wait and see. I’ve always thought I could play for the club on a regular basis. I’ve never felt I wasn’t good enough to be there.
“Once you do that, you’re defeated. Obviously, I’ve watched as many games as I possibly could over here. They’ve done brilliantly this season and I want to be involved in that. Any player would.
“I reckon they’ll have watched me this season in Portugal. I’ve had a few messages from people at the club.”
Mikey needs to prove his worth in pre-season and if Ange thinks there’s something there, the winger will likely be involved in the first team squad when Celtic look to defend their SPFL title for a third consecutive season.
We don’t know how the squad is going to shake out this summer. Mikey has an opportunity, but the door could be closed on him pretty quickly if he fails to perform. Ange has been ruthless with his squad selection when someone hasn’t been up to scratch.
Let’s hope Mikey can do the business.
