ASTON VILLA star Trezeguet has delivered a timely reminder to Celtic and Celtic fans that things must change in order for the club to reach it’s full potential.
The Premier League star confirmed he was ready and willing to sign for Celtic once upon a time when he was looking to move away from Al Ahly in 2015.
Trezeguet is a key player for the Birmingham side nowadays, but speaking about his path to the Premier League – he revealed his route could have come through Celtic but the club would not shell out the cash to land him.
The winger moved to Anderlecht eventually where he admits the move didn’t really work out, a loan stint elsewhere before a move to Aston Villa stood him in good stead.
As quoted by the Glasgow Times, the player said: “When I decided I was going to go to Europe, there were a lot of clubs who were interested.
“One of them was Celtic and I was going to sign for them, but the deal was never completed because of the poor financial compensation the Scottish club offered Al Ahly.
“Instead, I ended up signing for Anderlecht instead. They made an appropriate effort to sign me on loan with the right financial outlay and I signed for them permanently eventually.
“That move didn’t really work out for me and I ended up joining Mouscron on loan and then had a choice whether to move to Aston Villa or clubs in Italy and I am pleased I chose to go to England.
“But I could have been a Celtic player before then.”
This has to be a timely reminder to Dominic McKay – we must do better in the transfer market and be more aggressive when we need to be. Celtic have missed out on some top players because Peter Lawwell’s negotiating tactics were always so stringent, there was little wiggle room.
I’m not suggesting for one second Celtic pay over the odds for players, but when there’s a deal to be done and there’s a belief a player can vastly improve our team, we must act.
