Brendan Rodgers, former Celtic manager, is facing what some consider to be unfair criticism from Celtic supporters, according to sportswriter Hugh Keevins.

Keevins compared Rodgers’ departure from Celtic to Leicester City in 2019 to Ange Postecoglou’s recent move to Tottenham Hotspur. Despite being a favourite among bookmakers to return to Parkhead, Rodgers’ acrimonious exit from the club four years ago has left a bitter taste in the mouths of many Hoops fans.
Keevins expressed his disagreement with the treatment of Rodgers by the fans, stating that the former manager “committed no crime” and simply pursued another job opportunity.
He highlighted the fact that Postecoglou has now done the same thing, yet the reaction towards Rodgers has been excessive.
Keevins believes that Rodgers’ return to Celtic would be a positive development for the club, but acknowledges that supporter hostility may make it difficult for Celtic’s majority shareholder, Dermot Desmond, to convince him to come back.
Addressing the criticism Rodgers has received since he’s been linked with a move back to Celtic, Keevins said: [Clyde 1 SSB]
“All we have heard so far is the case against Brendan Rodgers.
“He has been called some poor names by supporters. I think it has been desperately unfair on Brendan Rodgers.
“He committed no crime. He went away to another job. Ange Postecoglou has just done the same thing and I understand that Brendan left when the championship was all-but – but not definitely – won.
“However, he has committed no crime. I think the reaction to him is over the top and if he came back I think it would be a good thing for Celtic.
“I’m not sure how Dermot Desmond would sell him the club again given he must be aware of the kind of criticism that is levelled against him in Glasgow.”
