Hugh Keevins Admits he Literally had to “Eat His Own Words”

Hugh Keevins recently found himself in a situation where he was literally made to eat his words.

Following a comment he made after a Celtic game that ended in a disappointing 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock, where he doubted Celtic’s ability to recover from the setback, Keevins received an unexpected delivery: a cake inscribed with his quote, “Celtic don’t have the players that are good enough to come back from this.”

And in usual Keevins style, his words were proven wrong.

The cake arrived at the studio during a live broadcast. At the time of his comment, Celtic’s season seemed to be faltering, but the team dramatically turned their fortunes around, clinching the league title by an impressive eight-point margin and securing the Scottish Cup, completing a double in Brendan Rodgers’ first season back at the helm.

Reflecting on the incident and Celtic’s subsequent success, Keevins shared in his RecordSport column, “February 17. Celtic 1 Kilmarnock 1. Brendan Rodgers’ team booed off the park after conceding a stoppage-time equaliser. My post-match pronouncement was: “I don’t think Celtic have the players to come back from this.” But now the dust has settled and we all know Rodgers recovered and went from strength to title-winning strength while Philippe Clement fell to earth with a resounding thump over at Ibrox and resorted to a catalogue of mystifying excuses.

“A fired-up listener decided I should literally eat my own words and sent me a cake with my misplaced observation preserved in sugar and flour. Condemnation by confectionary. I gathered the grandchildren, cut them each a reminder of the old fellow’s folly and toasted the anonymous person who went to the considerable expense of making my punishment easily digestible. There’s plenty more where that quote came from and the baker’s recipe should be preserved for another day.”

The baker will have been busy baking cakes for everyone who wrote Celtic off just for Rodgers to storm on to win a league and cup double.
