Hayato Inamura Stakes Claim for Key Celtic Role

Hayato Inamura put in another strong performance at left-back this afternoon for Celtic against Newcastle United at Celtic Park.

Playing 55 minutes, it marked his third consecutive outing in the position, having previously impressed against Cork City and Sporting Lisbon.

Inamura continued his good form before making way for Kieran Tierney. With Greg Taylor having left the club this summer and Celtic reportedly in the market for a left-back, the Japanese defender is starting to look like a real option within the squad.

Inamura initially joined Celtic as a centre-back, having played the majority of his football in that position in Japan. But he’s shown in recent games just how comfortable he is operating on the left side.

This afternoon, he once again displayed composure on the ball, sharp vision and football intelligence, traits that could make him an ideal backup for Tierney going into the new season.

The reaction at Celtic Park said plenty. There was a big noise when Tierney came on, but also huge appreciation for Inamura as he left the pitch.

The 23-year-old had another superb afternoon, and fans might be starting to feel there isn’t such a pressing need to bring in additional cover.

Inamura added to the growing excitement with a key block in the first half, a moment that showed his impressive contributions aren’t limited to when the ball is at his feet.

He’s emerging as a versatile and capable defender, and his performances this pre-season have turned heads.
