Hartson Wants New Contract for Celtic Star But Now is Not the Time – Opinion

JOE Hart has been a great signing for Celtic, answering our SOS call during Postecoglou’s first transfer window with the Hoops.

He’s added some real quality and experience at the back, stabilising what was an extremely leaky defence.

John Hartson has urged the club to look at extending Joe Hart‘s current contract, but I don’t believe this summer is the time to be looking at doing this.

Speaking on the Celtic number 1’s situation, the former Celtic striker said: [Go Radio]

“Joe’s [Hart] contract is up at the end of the season. Joe, I think he’s loved his time at Celtic. And I would think, from how well that he’s done and I’m not going to tell Ange how to do his business, by the way.

“But I would think on the back of how well he’s done and what he’s brought to the dressing room and vociferous around the pitch and everything else. I would think they’ll want to get Joe Hart tied up for a few more years.

“The fans love him and he’s playing in a successful team as well. He’s playing, he’s making saves. He’s really, really fitted in.

“He loves playing for the club. Vast experience over the years and he’s not done a lot wrong has he.”

Joe Hart is 36, and asking him to maintain the standard of performances that he’s had this season, pulling off some great saves, is going to be a big ask.

He’s probably going to be Celtic’s number 1 next season, with his contract expiring next summer, not this summer as Hartson said, but the club will be looking at other options for the longer-term, younger goalkeeper.

It seems the signing of Ben Siegrist hasn’t panned out the way that it was hoped.

Whether one comes in in the summer and is the understudy to Hart, or the club wait until next summer to make a change, handing Joe Hart an extension just now doesn’t make sense.

I think the club should play the waiting game, and discuss Hart’s options with him at the end of next season.
