Harry Redknapp Urges Rangers to Copy Celtic Blueprint

Former Tottenham and West Ham boss Harry Redknapp has called on Rangers to follow Celtic’s lead by bringing back Steven Gerrard, just like the Hoops did with Brendan Rodgers in 2023.

With Gerrard linked to the Ibrox hot seat, Redknapp praised Celtic’s decision to bring back Rodgers, despite a small portion of the support being unhappy with his return.

However, given Rodgers won seven trophies in his first spell as Celtic boss, while Gerrard won one at Rangers, the comparison really ends there. Gerrard and Rodgers are not comparable as managers or in terms of their achievements. However, Redknapp believes Gerrard would improve Rangers.

He said: (Bet Victor), “I look at Celtic taking Brendan Rodgers back – so why can’t Rangers do the same with Gerrard? Brendan has gone back and done a great job at Celtic Park.

“I know some of the fans were a little bit upset when he left the first time round, but that’s what happens in football – it was the same when I left Portsmouth then went back there.

“I believe Gerrard would be a great choice for Rangers again, and they’ll hope he can bridge the gap between them and Celtic.”

Hope that’s where it really ends. Gerrard and Rodgers both know each other well, with Rodgers having coached Gerrard at Liverpool. Head to head, Rodgers won the League Cup before leaving in February 2019, with Celtic leading the table before Neil Lennon took over.

The Irishman would welcome any sort of challenge, as he showed last season he is a manager who thrives under pressure and in a potential title race. But given how much Celtic have improved in the last year, it’s hard to imagine an immediate challenge coming from across the city.

Rangers may look to follow Celtic’s blueprint by reappointing Gerrard, but it’s clear that Rodgers is a far more accomplished manager who has proven himself outside of Glasgow.
