‘Surprised No One Has Bid’ – Harry Kewell on Daizen Maeda’s Future

Former Celtic coach Harry Kewell has admitted his surprise at the lack of bids the club has received for Daizen Maeda.

The man from Japan has been in fine form this season, and has ensured that Kyogo departing for Rennes has had little impact to Celtic’s numbers up top.

Although Brendan Rodgers has said that he views the player as a winger, Maeda has played through the middle in almost every game since Kyogo left in January

The Japanese forward has been on fire for Brendan Rodgers’ side, scoring 26 goals and assisting eight. He added another to his tally and won a penalty for his side in Celtic’s 5-2 win over St Mirren.

Kewell worked closely with Maeda during his time at Celtic under Ange Postecoglou, and it seems that the pair have kept in touch, with Maeda often reacting to Harry Kewell’s managerial moments while with Yokohama F. Marinos.

The former Liverpool winger believes Maeda’s work rate and pressing ability should make him a prime target for clubs across Europe.

He said [Mail via Record]: “I’m surprised someone hasn’t already come in for Daizen, that’s the truth.

“The way football is played today, especially with the high press and high energy fans and managers want, he’s the perfect candidate. So there’s no limit for Daizen, in terms of the level he can get to.

“Unfortunately for Celtic, if he keeps scoring they’ll find it difficult to hold on to him. Because there will be other clubs in for him. And that’s a great thing because it shows what an amazing job Celtic have done with a fantastic player.”

Daizen Maeda doesn’t seem the type of player who’d be pushing for a move, so Celtic fans will be hoping that there is no summer exit for the player.
