‘Gentleman’s Agreement’ – Pundit Revisits Celtic Transfer Theory

PLZ and BBC Pundit Tam McManus believes there to be a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ between Celtic and Giakoumakis over improved contract terms.

Lot of rumours surrounding the Greek striker’s future have been floated in recent times. Some believe the promise of a new contract and the club’s inability to reach a new agreement with the player is why he might want to leave.

There are other rumours stating Giakoumakis feels he needs to be number one striker and would like to head out and be that guy somewhere if he can’t be at Celtic.

9th November 2022; Fir Park, Motherwell, N Lanarkshire, Scotland, Scottish Premier league football, Motherwell versus Celtic: Daizen Maeda of Celtic celebrates with Giorgos Giakoumakis of Celtic after he makes it 2-0 to Celtic in the 84th minute

Tam speculates on the potential issues speaking to This is Futbol: “He [Giakoumakis] has a while left on his current deal but there seems to be a gentleman’s agreement that if he came in and done well then Celtic would bump his money up.

“I don’t know if that is going to happen. He is obviously looking for a new contract on more money. Celtic are in a strong position though, they have him until 2026.

“You want your players to be happy. I think he has something like 25 goals in 50 games so he has a good record. I don’t know how this is going to play out but he has only been there a year.

“If they can get him tied down to a big new contract and everyone is happy, that has to be the aim for Celtic.

“They won’t want to lose him.”

Celtic fans have guys like Odsonne Edouard and Kris Ajer fresh in their memories and they know just how a wantaway player can affect the form of the player and the whole club .

Ange has cultivated a happy dressing room and we don’t want to see that disturbed in anyway. Under the most ideal circumstances, Celtic and Giak would come to an agreement short term and revisit the whole deal in the summer where they would either stick or twist.

Losing valuable players mid-season isn’t conducive to keeping the momentum going. We can see Celtic have been caught a little blind sided by this, as they don’t seem to have a front runner or replacement lined up, unliked the case of Alistair Johnston – the club fully aware Juranovic is in demand.

The other resolution would be to get around a table and thrash out a deal that works for all parties going forward. Giakoumakis has just turned 28 and knows the next deal he signs is probably going to be his biggest.
