Brendan Rodgers has dismissed any talk of Celtic surpassing Rangers’ overall trophy haul as his side prepares for Sunday’s Premier Sports Cup final at Hampden Park.

While a win over their fiercest rivals would give Celtic their 119th major trophy — eclipsing Rangers’ total of 118 — the Hoops boss insists his sole focus is on winning the cup rather than the historical implications.
Rodgers, who has been a relentless advocate of maintaining high standards and focusing on the immediate task at hand, played down the significance of overtaking Rangers’ tally.
Speaking ahead of the showdown, Rodgers said: [Cylde 1 SSB]
“For me, it’s about the game, it’s about winning the trophy. We want to win as many trophies as we can. We don’t necessarily have to tell everyone — we just want to win, win well, and get into our next game and look to our next trophy.”
Despite Rodgers’ attempt to deflect the historical significance, there’s no denying that the match carries immense weight for both sets of supporters.
Celtic fans will relish the opportunity to pull ahead of Rangers in terms of silverware, while Rangers fans will be desperate to prevent their rivals from claiming such a symbolic victory.
For the Celtic squad, the final represents an opportunity to secure the first major trophy of the season and give Rodgers his first league cup since returning to the club last summer.
The occasion also offers the chance to build momentum heading into the crucial winter period of the campaign.
Kick-off is at 15.30 on Sunday.
