Friday Press Conference: Brendan Rodgers Addresses Nicolas Kuhn’s Form

Brendan Rodgers has moved to defend Nicolas Kuhn amid growing criticism of the winger’s form, insisting the German has been a key part of Celtic’s campaign – even if his recent numbers suggest otherwise.

Kuhn’s impact since the turn of the year has dipped notably, with just four goals to his name in that time. His performance against St Johnstone saw him hooked at half-time, adding fuel to the debate about his place in the starting XI.

But Rodgers believes Kuhn deserves more credit for his overall contribution and the physical demands he’s dealt with this season.

“Nicolas has got fantastic ability. He’s a good guy. And, like I said, probably one of those players coming in on the back of this is the most games he’s ever played.

“The most intensity he’s played in. The most goals he’s ever scored. So it’s been a really, really long season for the likes of him. And he’s been outstanding for us. But, yes, listen, my priority is always the players. My priority is always them. So I’m always there to support, to give them the little jolt when they need it. To put the arm around them and protect them when it’s needed. But, no, listen, he’s done fantastic for us.

Chris Sutton is on the winger’s case, too, joking that Sunderland wouldn’t even sign him if he kept this form up after Newcastle United were interested in him in the winter window.

Yang, who replaced the German winger at halftime on Sunday in the defeat to St Johnstone, could’ve been set for a run of games in the team. However, Brendan Rodgers confirmed on Friday that the winger fell awkwardly on his elbow, which will see him out for a few weeks, with his arm in a sling.

Nicolas Kuhn needs to up his game in the run in, and remind Celtic fans why they were calling player of the season before the turn of the year.
