Fran Alonso Reacts as Celtic Women Continue Formidable Start To SWPL

Celtic’s Women’s team continued their perfect start to the season on Sunday as they hosted Dundee United at the Excelsior Stadium in Airdrie.

Fran Alonso’s side has been on terrific form in 2023/24 so far, and there was no letup at the weekend.

For the second time this season, the Ghirls scored nine goals in a solitary match. United was left for dead as strikes courtesy of Kit Loferski, Amy Sharkey, Amy Gallacher, Natalie Ross, Tiree Burchill, Colette Cavanagh, Chloe Craig, and Maria McAneny secured the points.

It was a hugely positive afternoon for the Women’s team, who are absolutely flying at the minute. Top of the SWPL and ahead of second place by a colossal 19 goals on goal difference, things look as bright as ever for Alonso and Co.

Speaking after the match, Fran Alonso said: [Celtic TV] “I thought we were excellent. In the first half, it was almost perfect. We didn’t tell the girls because we wanted them to keep pushing.

“But overall, it was an outstanding performance up against a team that has just kept a clean sheet against Hibs away, which is a very tough game.

“So we knew that they are very organised defensively, but I thought today we were unplayable. It was fantastic.

“Credit to the girls, and also to the younger ones that started for the first time like Clare Goldie and Tiree Burchill, and Amy Sharkey coming on and scoring a goal too.

“The future of the club is in a very good place and the girls are flying at the moment.

“We haven’t won anything, so it’s not time to get complacent. It’s time to push even harder to make sure this performance is what we reach every game.

“But I am very proud because this is not easy, especially in a week where we played three games.”

The team are netting left, right and centre, but what is greatly positive is that goals are coming from all over the pitch. Just on Sunday, there were eight different scorers.

Albeit the Ghirls have had some favourable fixtures thus far, their current form is only positive. It will only stand them in good stead going forward, with a crunch Champions League clash with Brondby on the horizon after a trip to Hibs this weekend.
