Forrest Hails Tommy Burns Influence After Emotional Trophy Day Strike

James Forrest has described his stoppage-time goal against St Mirren on Trophy Day as one of the greatest moments of his career.

The veteran winger etched his name into the record books once more by becoming the fourth player in Celtic history to score in 16 consecutive seasons while he became the most decorated player, taking over from Bobby Lennox a few weeks ago.

Speaking to CeltsAreHere, Forrest admitted the day was emotional and unforgettable.

“It was an unbelievable feeling,” he said. “I think Saturday, it’s hard to put into words just how good it was. The reaction from the fans, the players, the staff inside after… it’s up there with one of the best moments at Celtic. Having my family there as well made it really special. It’s something I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”

Forrest, now Celtic’s most decorated player of all time, was given the honour of carrying the Premiership trophy out at Celtic Park after full-time. His late goal spared Celtic a defeat on what was otherwise a flat afternoon and ensured the moment was fitting for a modern great.

He also reflected on the journey from academy hopeful to club legend, paying tribute to the late Tommy Burns and the importance of staying grounded.

“When you’re coming through the youth, Tommy Burns would always be there,” he said. “He would always make sure families and players knew that not a lot of players come through this Celtic academy and make it. So it was obviously a dream to make your debut and stay and play for Celtic for so many times, so many seasons.

“I’ve never taken it for granted, and I won’t until I finish playing here.”

Forrest now looks ahead to Saturday’s Scottish Cup Final against Aberdeen, where he could add yet another honour to his record-breaking haul.

If Celtic are to win the trophy on Satuday, it would be their sixth treble in nine years – an unbelievable achievement.

Looking ahead to the day, the winger said: “Feeling good, I think, for everyone. It was a great day on Saturday, trophy day.

“The fans’ atmosphere at the end was really good and the boys got to spend it with their families and that as well, but we had Sunday and Monday off and then we were back in on Tuesday and were preparing for the cup final. I think loads of boys have done it so they know that that’s kind of gone now and we know we want to finish on a high and everyone’s been preparing well so we’re looking forward to Saturday.”

Celtic travel to the national stadium on Saturday for a 3 pm kick off, knowing they’re potentially 90 minutes away from some more history, and James Forrest could be adding another honour to his collection.
