Former Celtic Manager Wants Club to ‘Make a Real Statement’

Former Celtic manager John Barnes believes Celtic need to clear the decks at the end of the season and the only way forward is to make a ‘real statement’ of intent.

The Englishman didn’t manage to survive half the things Neil Lennon has this season at Celtic Park but with the club toiling, Barnes revealed a big appointment is needed, someone with a track record who can push the team on once again.

“Things need to change and I think the club would need to make a real statement – in terms of the investment coming in and a manager coming.” Barnes Told SunSport.

“I think they would have to make a statement by going for someone with a good track record – basically a big-name manager who would come in and make big signings that said, ‘We’re going to get back to the top.’

“Looking at the squad, a lot of players have been there for a while and, depending on who comes in, he’ll decide what players will fit his way of playing. With that, inevitably, some will stay but some will most definitely go.

“I also think that some of the players have become too comfortable because it’s been so easy for them for so long.”

Celtic started the season with so much hope but it very quickly got away from us. From positive tests, and postponed games to very lacklustre performances and no first team goalkeeper. It’s been a mess!

What’s hurt the club more is their silence towards their supporters in recent months, ignoring the groundswell of calls for change and, instead, continuing down the same path until the end of this season.

We finish this season in May but our first Euro qualifier (providing we finish second) will be on July 20th, that’s not a lot of time for anybody to come in and make their mark.

Things have to be happening now, and if they are, this needs to be communicated.
