Celtic legend Davie Hay has given his thoughts into the rumours about a possible Gary Hooper Parkhead return this summer.
Writing for the Evening Times, Hay believes Celtic do need to strengthen their attacking line this summer but he’s unconvinced that a returning Gary Hooper would be the answer.
The former Celtic manager made no qualms about it when he declared that Celtic have to be shooting higher than the outgoing Sheffield Wednesday striker.
He Wrote: “The top of the park is an area that Celtic definitely have to strengthen in the window, but whoever they do bring in over the summer, I would like to think they would be able to attract a better quality of player. That’s meaning no disrespect to a striker who did well for Celtic when he was here before, and has always known where the net is throughout his career.
“There may be a case to bring Hooper in to add a bit of depth to the squad along with someone else with a bit more quality as a starter, but I fully expect there to be higher targets in the Celtic manager’s mind rather than a forward who has just been released by Sheffield Wednesday in the English Championship.”
Hooper was great the first time around for Celtic but the player is now 31 and been deemed surplus to requirements in Sheffield. There was a feeling when Gary left that he had jumped ship just a little too soon but he had international and Premier League aspirations which never worked out for the frontman.
The Englishman will still feel he has more to give at a decent level but Hay obviously believes Celtic can do better and you can’t fault that opinion – we can! But do we want to spend the money to do so?
