Former Celtic Assistant Wins Promotion in Debut Season

Chris Davies, Brendan Rodgers’ former right-hand man at Celtic, has guided Birmingham City back to the Championship at the first time of asking, delivering a dominant League One campaign in his debut season as a manager.

Davies took over at St Andrew’s last summer and has wasted no time making his mark. His Birmingham side have been relentless all season, clinching promotion with six games to spare following a 2-1 victory over Peterborough on Tuesday night.

They sit top of the table with 95 points, the highest-scoring team in the division and boasting the best defensive record. With the League One points record of 103 within reach, the Blues could yet etch their name into the history books.

Former Celtic midfielder Tomoki Iwata, who made the move south in the summer, has played his part in the promotion push, providing the kind of midfield steel and composure he showed during his time in Glasgow.

It’s a rapid rise for Davies, whose coaching credentials were honed alongside Rodgers at clubs like Swansea, Liverpool, Leicester and Celtic. He had a spell with Ange Postecoglou at Spurs, too.

Having now made a seamless transition into frontline management, his success this season will inevitably spark interest about how far he can go in the dugout.
