Former Celtic right-back Cristian Gamboa has called time on his playing career, announcing his retirement after six seasons with Bundesliga side VfL Bochum.
The Costa Rican posted an emotional farewell on social media, saying: “Thank you for six years full of emotion, full of people with heart, full of pride. Thank you for letting us be a part of this family. A part of Bochum. Blue and White forever.” He signed off with a nod to his well-known character, adding: “PS: Please don’t forget: 3 points, 3 beers.”

Gamboa, now 34, arrived at Celtic in August 2016 from West Bromwich Albion in a £1.2million move, handpicked by Brendan Rodgers during his first season in charge at Parkhead. Despite being brought in with promise, his Celtic debut couldn’t have been tougher – a 7-0 humbling at the hands of Barcelona in the Champions League at the Camp Nou.
While he struggled to make a consistent impact in Glasgow, making just 30 appearances over three seasons, Gamboa was part of the historic Invincibles squad that swept to a domestic treble unbeaten in Rodgers’ debut campaign. Lustig was the starting right-back throughout that incredible campaign.

He was released a year before the end of his contract and moved to Germany, where he enjoyed a stable spell with Bochum, helping them earn promotion and retain their Bundesliga status.
Though his time at Celtic was short and not without its challenges, Gamboa remains one of the lesser-heralded names in that memorable Invincible side – a piece of great history he’ll carry with him into retirement.
