FAO Peter Lawwell – We Haven’t Forgotten: Opinion

Celtic might have a grand total of eight days to rest and recover before the Glasgow Derby. However, it should not be overlooked or dismissed that we should today be preparing for a Europa League showdown in the last 16 of the competition.

The bhoys had a fantastic chance to get further in the competition and capitulated as if they had learned nothing from the Cluj Champions League qualifier.

When I say they, I mean Peter Lawwell who continued his streak of not building on a position of strength and being satisfied with domestic domination, by ‘they’, I mean the manager and coaching staff who got decisions wrong on the night and, by ‘they’, I mean the players who let themselves down too on the night.

I don’t dredge this up two weeks on to be negative, but we must learn from our mistakes and not pass them off as non-events after the initial hurting stage is over.

The League is our bread and butter, but Europe should be where we try to make our mark. There can be no excuses, we had the money to reinforce the first team for the doubleheader and we didn’t. It happened in the Cluj game at the start of the season when the preparation was far from ideal and the recruitment slow and tedious.

We must always strive to be the best we possibly can and when some read this, they’ll be furious I’m not sitting down and settling for what I’m given. As if to ask for more from the club, when it’s within their remit to deliver more is sacrilege. Unprecedented domestic success is a source of great pride and celebration for me and so many of the support but we should not hide behind it.

After an amazing group display, we should have been inspired to think big; instead, all Peter Lawwell was inspired to do was charge us £37-£42 to watch us crash out. I’ve not forgotten and I hope when pre-season comes next term, we put the board’s feet to the fire to make sure we are prepared for Europe.
