Falkirk Hand Trial to Former Celtic Midfielder Before Cup Tie

Former Celtic midfielder Ismaila Soro could be set for a swift reunion with the Hoops, with RecordSport reporting he is currently training with Falkirk ahead of their Premier Sports Cup clash at Parkhead this Friday.

The 27-year-old Ivorian is on trial with John McGlynn’s side as they prepare to open the second round of this year’s competition.

The tie, which kicks off at 7.45pm, will be broadcast live on Premier Sports and sees the newly-promoted Premiership outfit take on Brendan Rodgers’ side in Glasgow.

Soro has been without a club since leaving Israeli Premier League side Beitar Jerusalem earlier this summer. His two-year stay in the Middle East followed a spell in Portugal on loan from Celtic, before he departed Parkhead permanently in 2023.

Falkirk’s decision to bring him in on trial comes as McGlynn continues to shape his squad for life back in Scotland’s top flight. The Bairns will be looking to test themselves against the champions in what will be one of their toughest assignments of the season so far.

Soro’s time at Celtic began when he arrived from Bnei Yehuda in January 2020 on a four-and-a-half-year deal. He made over 40 appearances in the green and white, featuring in domestic league and cup matches as well as European competition. Among those outings was a Scottish Cup clash against Falkirk, meaning he could soon be lining up on the opposite side in familiar surroundings.

While his spell in Glasgow had its moments, Soro struggled for a consistent starting role, particularly following managerial changes. After Ange Postecoglou’s arrival, the midfielder found himself further down the pecking order, prompting moves abroad in search of regular football.

Now, with Falkirk stepping up preparations for a return to the big stage, Soro’s experience in the Scottish Premiership could be a valuable asset. Friday’s encounter will provide both the player and McGlynn with a clear picture of whether a deal would be the right fit.

For Soro, the opportunity presents the chance to relaunch his career in familiar territory, while Falkirk will be keen to assess whether the former Celtic man can bring the bite and energy needed to compete at the highest level.
