Ex-Celtic Stars Plot Silverware in Greece

Giorgos Giakoumakis is set for a return to Greek football, with a move to PAOK now at the agreement-in-principle stage, according to Greek journalist Giannis Chorianopoulos.

The deal would see the striker link back up with former Celtic teammate Greg Taylor, who now plies his trade with the Thessaloniki outfit.

Giakoumakis only joined Liga MX side Cruz Azul in January 2024, but his time in Mexico appears to be coming to a swift end. His ability to lead the line and deliver goals has attracted PAOK, who are looking to bolster their attack as they aim for silverware both domestically and in Europe.

Taylor’s presence at PAOK adds a layer of familiarity for Giakoumakis, with the pair having played key roles under Ange Postecoglou during Celtic’s 2021/22 double-winning campaign.

The left-back’s move to Greece flew under the radar earlier in the window, but he’s now settling into his new surroundings in Thessaloniki.

Giakoumakis made a strong impact at Celtic before moving to Atlanta United in 2023. He scored 26 goals in 57 appearances in green and white, proving a key figure in Postecoglou’s early success. His move to the MLS was followed by a short spell in Mexico, but a switch to PAOK signals a homecoming of sorts and a chance to reignite his career closer to home.

Celtic will be keeping an eye on how Giakoumakis fares, particularly with one of their former full-backs already part of the setup in Thessaloniki.
