Ex-Celtic Star Takes Dig at Brendan Rodgers as he Backs Neil Lennon

Former Celtic player Bobby Petta has told Celtic fans the team will be less predictable next term with Neil Lennon at the helm after teams worked out how to play against Brendan Rodgers’ side in the later stages of his premiership.

Petta is a former teammate of Neil Lennon and has backed the Irishman to bring some swagger back to Celtic and make them a much more difficult outfit to play against.

“I expect Lenny’s team to move the ball forward a bit quicker next season.” he told SunSport.

“For the first 18 months under Brendan Rodgers, the team was playing with a style the people loved and they were cutting through opponents like a knife through butter.

“But then that became a bit predictable and the other teams worked out how Celtic were going to play and they made it harder for them.

“They’d sit off the play and, as a result, there was too much short passing sideways and back.

“I can understand why Neil might stick with that style in European ties but in domestic games, there’s not the same need for keepers to be trying to build the play from the final third of the pitch.”

It seems like a lifetime ago when Celtic were swaggering through games. The bhoys have got important results when they needed to but compared to the first 12-18 months under Brendan Rodgers, the build-up play and penetration has been lacking.

Celtic do need some more variation in their play and to do that Neil Lennon must bring in players who can change things up when need be.
