Ex-Celt Urges New Manager to Trigger Contract Clause

CHARLIE MULGREW has told Sky Sports it’s a no-brainer from Celtic’s end to trigger Leigh Griffiths contract clause.

The striker has a four-year deal with the club but the final year of that deal is optional for the club.

Leigh has not been a major scoring force for the club in quite some time but fans like having him around because they know if they need a goal, Leigh could be our man when we most need it.

There’s no doubt in any new setup Leigh would become a cameo player more than the leading man. He struggles for fitness but his goal-scoring instincts still make him valuable enough to stick around.

Speaking to Sky Sports and cited by Record Sport, Mulgrew explains his position on the Celtic striker.

“You might get an extra bit of motivation from Leigh because he is coming into the last year of his contract if Celtic take up the option.

“If a manager can get the arm around him and get him scoring, a fit Leigh Griffiths is worth his weight in gold.

“Get him fit, get him confident and get him scoring goals. I think it’s a no-brainer.

“Also, if I was Scotland manager I would get him in the squad somehow for the Euros.

“He’s a goalscorer. You saw what he did against England the last time and he turns up for the big occasions.

“He is somebody that I would want in my squad and somebody I would want to get the best out of.”

It feels like we’re getting close to a managerial appointment and ultimately it should be up to Neil Lennon’s successor to decide if Leigh stays on or not.

My gut says Leigh would be better off moving on this summer and banging in goals as a main striker at a smaller club.

However, the selfish part of me would like to see him stick around and contribute some goals to the cause as we go through a transition.

All the burning questions surrounding Celtic will be answered shortly. The rebuild is nearly upon us.
