When it comes to Andy Walker criticising Celtic he doesn’t really need an excuse but when you serve him up something like Tuesday night against Cluj the former Celt is certainly going to come out of the woodwork to have his say.
The Sky Sports pundit’s hyper critical stance on Celtic can be tiresome but this time the frustrating thing is he has a point.
Walker believes Neil Lennon carries the can for what happened at Celtic Park on Tuesday evening. The team shipped four goals against and were eliminated from the Champions League qualifiers.
With Celtic losing heavily on the night – Walkers points to the Celtic bench and questions just exactly why Neil Lennon chose not to play one or even two of his new defenders for the pivotal game. Given the number of defenders Celtic have let go or sold this summer – it really is a point of contention.
“He said that the Belgian had come through a hard time — and then he sits him on the bench for 90 minutes alongside the £7m centre-half Christopher Jullien.” Walker told SunSport.
“Celtic lost five international defenders at the end of last season and just sold another in Kieran Tierney.
“Yet, after spending £10m on two new signings, neither of them are used in the most important game of the season, even though they both played at the weekend and clearly aren’t injured.
“English clubs can afford to do that because they have so much TV revenue but Scottish clubs can’t.”
Celtic now drop into the Europa League play-off round against AIK or Sheriff and you’d like to think there will not be a repeat of Neil Lennon’s crazy match line up which saw him jam too many midfielders into his side.
