Bolton Wanderers are set to make one last push to sign Johnny Kenny before the transfer window closes, despite the Celtic striker recently signing a new deal with the Scottish champions.
The Trotters have been keen on the Irishman throughout the summer and have already made attempts to secure his signature. However, Celtic have so far stood firm, with the club reportedly holding out for a fee in the region of £1 million.
Kenny’s prospects have been boosted in recent weeks. He scored his first goal at Celtic Park during Saturday’s 3-0 win over Livingston, smashing home Daizen Maeda’s low cross in front of the home support. It was a well-taken finish and a timely reminder of his quality just as the window nears its end.
Despite being on the fringes of the first team last season, the 22-year-old has impressed in pre-season and earned praise from Brendan Rodgers for his attitude and work rate. His new contract seemed to signal Celtic’s intention to keep him involved, but Bolton aren’t ready to walk away just yet.
Reports in England, from Alan Nixon’s Patreon, suggest the League One side are preparing one final offer to try and tempt Celtic into a sale before the window slams shut on 1 September. Kenny’s goal at the weekend may have complicated matters for them, especially with Adam Idah struggling for fitness and Celtic still light up front.
With time ticking down, it now remains to be seen whether Celtic stick to their valuation or decide Kenny’s progress is worth holding on to a little longer.
