Reo Hatate found himself in the unfamiliar place of being on the bench for Saturday’s opener against Ross County.
The Japanese midfielder, who has been sensational over the piece since coming to the club, was a favourite under Ange Postecoglou. However, it looks as if he has work to do if he’s to convince Brendan Rodgers he’s worth starting.
It was a surprise for many to see David Turnbull’s name on the team sheet instead of Reo, but David made his opportunity count, bagging two goals in the 4-2 victory. Hatate did get on during the second half.
Speaking on why he went for Turnbull over Reo, Brendan Rodgers made it clear everyone has a blank slate: “For me, it [Turnbull’s inlclusion] was a clean slate, I had the chance to watch all the players in pre-season. He’s a lot more mature now. He’s been excellent” he told Sunsport.

“Like I’ve said, last season doesn’t really matter, you move forward.
“It’s about drawing a line under that.”
To keep players hungry, you might have to let them know they aren’t untouchable regarding the starting XI.
It will be interesting to see what kind of week Reo has on the training ground and if he finds himself back in the team at Pittodrie.
