Daniel Levy Explains Decision to Sack Ange Postecoglou

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has broken his silence over Ange Postecoglou’s dismissal, despite the Australian having delivered Spurs’ first trophy in 17 years with their Europa League triumph.

16 days after the final against Manchester United, the Aussie boss was handed his books.

Levy acknowledged that while the final decision ultimately rested with him, the club’s technical team and board were deeply involved in the process.

“Ultimately, the decision sits with me, but it’s always a collective decision,” he told the Overlap.

“We have a board of directors, but under the board, we have a group of technical staff, and they advise.

“We had to explain the decision to part ways with Ange. Ange just won us a trophy – a European trophy – highly significant and he’s always going to be in our history.

“However, we couldn’t lose sight of the fact that we finished 17th in the league, we lost 22 Premier League games, and it’s impossible for Tottenham to be in that position.

“And so we had to take the emotion out of it and we had to give some data points as to why we decided to do what we did.”

Though Postecoglou guided Spurs to glory, finishing 17th and suffering 22 league defeats made his position untenable in Levy’s view. The decision makes more sense in context, success in Europe, but failure at home. It’s hard to defend the Premier League form, but injuries really didn’t help the manager. Yet, he still delivered on his promise – to deliver a trophy in his second season.

Postecoglou has since been replaced by Thomas Frank. Rumours fruitlessly linked him to a return to Europe or a move to the Saudi league, but the former Celtic and Australia boss remains without a role as the new season begins.

It will be interesting to see where he heads next. He won’t rush into anything, and he’ll wait for the right project.

Brendan Rodgers’ contract expires next summer and Celtic will be looking to tie him down to a new deal.
