Confirmed: Celtic Defender Completes Deadline Day Exit

Stephen Welsh has officially completed a season-long loan move from Celtic to Motherwell.

The 25-year-old defender had been in talks with multiple clubs throughout the summer but has now finalised a deal with the Fir Park side just ahead of the transfer deadline. Welsh underwent a medical on Monday and has now signed off on the paperwork, with the move confirmed by both clubs.

Welsh, who spent last season on loan at Mechelen in Belgium, was seeking regular first-team football after struggling to break into Brendan Rodgers’ plans this term. A potential switch to Plymouth Argyle was close earlier in the window, but Celtic’s delay in green-lighting the move saw it collapse, with the English club moving on to alternative targets.

Now, the Scotland youth international gets the chance to prove himself in the Premiership, where he’s expected to take on a key role in the heart of the defence.

Motherwell were keen to strengthen their backline, and Welsh brings top-flight experience and a point to prove. It’s a significant move for a player once tipped as a long-term prospect at Celtic, where he’s made over 40 first-team appearances.

Best of luck to him throughout the season. He deserves to be playing regularly.
