The highly-rated centre-back joins Brendan Rodgers’ side after being named Premier League 2 Player of the Year last season, having captained City’s youth team to the PL2 title. His arrival marks Celtic’s seventh signing of the summer window.
He was at the match on Sunday, sitting in the stands, as he watched Celtic’s Flag Day win over St Mirren, thanks to a late Luke McCowan goal.
Rodgers spoke highly of the 19-year-old ahead of the announcement, praising his ball-playing ability and athleticism during his press conference on Friday, which CeltsAreHere attended:“Yes, a very gifted young player. Obviously, coming through the system there at Manchester City, his profile fits very much what we want from our centre-halves. He’s quick, he’s dominant, he’s a good defender and of course, at Celtic, your centre-halves need to be able to progress the ball and that’s a big strength of his.”
Simpson-Pusey will now link up with a Celtic defence that has seen considerable change this summer. With Gustaf Lagerbielke departing for Braga, Maik Nawrocki heading out on loan to Hannover, and Stephen Welsh the subject of loan interest from Plymouth Argyle, the new arrival will provide much-needed cover and competition.
Rodgers acknowledged that the youngster will need time to get up to speed, having not played much football during pre-season. But with a long campaign ahead, particularly with Champions League qualifiers on the horizon, Simpson-Pusey is expected to get plenty of opportunities to impress.
