Chris Sutton’s Glasgow Derby ‘Farce’ Warning

CHRIS SUTTON is looking forward to the Glasgow Derby on Monday afternoon, hoping for a blockbuster match.

However, the former Celtic striker is very concerned about how the officials and VAR will affect the potential powderkeg tie.

We have witnessed breathtaking decisions go against Celtic since the introduction of VAR and inconsistency on the whole.

Even during the final home game of 2022, VAR was so prominent in everything that went on. One clearly onside goal from Reo Hatate took four minutes to be confirmed by the VAR official.

As we head into the derby, Chris Sutton brands it a ‘magnificent occasion’ but implores John Beaton not to rely on the technology unless absolutely necessary.

“Ibrox should be a magnificent occasion.” Sutton told RecordSport.

“I just worry about what is going to happen and whether the game is going to descend into a farce. Beaton has to be strong and must make the right calls at the correct time.

“And Collum in the VAR bunker should only get involved if it’s necessary or there’s a serious injustice. The Old Firm is a showcase fixture. We can’t let it turn into a shambles.”

Celtic enjoy a nine-point lead over their Glasgow counterparts. They enter the game knowing they can open up an even bigger gap at the top of the table. The Ibrox side knows they need to win to keep in touch with the current champions of Scotland.

Ange Postecoglou believes these games should be relished and enjoyed by the fans and the players. He’s hoping to earn another Ibrox victory on the day.

Will VAR have a big day on the day?
