CHRIS SUTTON has claimed Celtic’s match on Tuesday against Real Madrid is bigger than Saturday’s Glasgow Derby in the Daily Record.
I can understand the pundit’s reasoning, a win against Real Madrid would go down in the history books, and fans would talk about it for years, whereas a defeat to Rangers would only be remembered until January.
However, I don’t see it like that. A win on Saturday would mean Celtic go five points clear at the top of the table. That’s massive for the team, especially in the early parts of the season. If Celtic fall to a defeat today, our rivals go a point clear.
The thing is, Ange, won’t be thinking about the Real Madrid game; he knows that this game is important, he’ll turn his attention to the Champions League clash on Tuesday after the match today.
The manager has a big enough squad to be able to deal with two games in one week, and he’ll make some changes in necessary.
I understand Sutton’s view, make history on Tuesday night, and Postecoglou will be a hero. But the reality is, Celtic aren’t expecting to walk away with anything from their games against the European Champions, so why sacrifice three points and a derby win for it?
Celtic can still qualify from their group without a win against Real Madrid.
