Chris Sutton Warns Celtic Risk Embarrassment Without Transfer Backing

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has analysed where the Hoops will look to strengthen in the summer, with potential incomings and outgoings. With Champions League qualifiers looming, the pressure is on to ensure the squad is ready.

A combination of underwhelming performances, injuries, and interest in key players means Brendan Rodgers may have to deal with significant squad changes this summer.

Sutton has pointed out several positions where Rodgers needs to sign players and others where changes may be forced by circumstances ahead of what is set to be an exciting season next year.

He said: (RecordSport), “There’s bound to be interest in some of them. You wouldn’t be shocked if there’s a bid for Daizen Maeda and a big money offer could be hard to turn down.

“There was talk around Nicolas Kühn in January and it could happen again. I don’t think anyone would be surprised if Reo Hatate wanted a new challenge.

“That would leave some serious work required to get the squad up to scratch for the Champions League play-off qualifier.

“Celtic obviously need another striker. Kyogo hasn’t been replaced and I’ve said often enough, if Rodgers felt Adam Idah was the answer he would be starting him up front every week. Instead it’s been Maeda and that speaks volumes.

“They’ll need a top class wide man to come in now, with the Portuguese out until next year.

“Kieran Tierney is already on board and you’d imagine that will be no problem for him.
I’d love to see Greg Taylor secured on a new deal too… sometimes the grass isn’t always greener.

“Right back is sorted with Alistair Johnston and Anthony Ralston. Even though plenty of supporters would like another centre back to partner Cameron Carter-Vickers, I think they are fairly well off for competition in that area.”

There is certainly room for improvement in the Celtic team given the drop-off in results since the New Year, and Rodgers will be more aware of this than anyone.

If Celtic are to reach the next level, quality signings are needed that immediately improve the starting XI — something highlighted by their failure to win any of the last three Glasgow Derbies.

With Champions League qualifiers on the horizon and pressure to maintain domestic dominance, this summer’s transfer window will be crucial in shaping the direction of Celtic for years to come.
