Chris Sutton Unhappy After Celtic/Lille Flashpoint

If you follow Chris Sutton on social media, you will know he’s been a driving force behind head trauma and concussions in football.

The former Celtic striker has been constantly at the English FA to look into the correlation between football players and dementia from years gone by and wants proper protocols in place for today’s stars.

Jeremie Frimpong took a very sore head knock into the advertising boards at Celtic Park during the Lille game. As the play went on, the player was checked out on the sidelines before being allowed back on.

Sutton seeing this, took to social media to complain a better and thorough check should be done on footballers after something nasty like that happens.

The right-back would eventually come off after winning a penalty for his side and we’ll now wait to see if anything further comes of it.

Concussions in sport are nothing new but we’re learning much more about the correlation between simply heading a ball and dementia with so many of our older footballers suffering from the illness. Billy McNeill suffered from it in his later days and he was part of a generation which headed some pretty heavy footballs.

There should be better and stringent protocols in place for players to make sure they’re not heading back out onto the pitch hurt. A player is never going to tell you he can’t play.
