Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has rejected the notion that it would have been good for the Scottish game if Rangers won Sunday’s Premier Sports Cup final.
The Hoops faced Philippe Clement’s men in what turned out to be a Glasgow derby for the ages as the city’s big two played out a six-goal thriller.
Greg Taylor, Nicolas Kuhn, and Daizen Maeda all scored for the Bhoys, who equalised and then went ahead twice, only to be pegged back shortly after on both occasions.

The game went to penalties, and Brendan Rodgers’ men emerged victorious, winger Maeda coming up with the crucial winning spot-kick.
Recently, on the ‘It’s All Kicking Off!’ podcast (via Glasgow Times), host Ian Ladyman suggested to Sutton that Rangers winning might have been better for the Scottish game. The ex-Celtic striker shut him down immediately: “Oooh, what a load of rubbish,” he said.
“What an absolute load of guff. Why?
“We congratulate Manchester City for however many years. You don’t bat an eyelid with that.
“But because it’s Celtic now, who are the most successful club in terms of trophies – 119. But you have to earn the right. That’s what you have to do.”
Celtic won Sunday’s cup final fair and square and deserve enormous credit for doing so.
While some may hope for trophies to be more equally distributed in Scotland, we all know football doesn’t work like that.
The Hoops have earned their success over the years due to being a well-run club with the most talented footballers in the country. They haven’t been handed anything, and while success has become ingrained within the walls at Parkhead, winning trophies never gets old for supporters.
