Chris Sutton not getting carried away with Celtic’s Champions League win

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton isn’t getting too carried away with it following Celtic’s 2-1 victory over Feyenoord in the UEFA Champions League at Celtic Park, offering a grounded perspective amidst the celebratory atmosphere.

While acknowledging the significance of Celtic’s first home Champions League win since 2013, Sutton maintains a pragmatic view of the team’s overall performance in European football this season.

Given the group Celtic were drawn, Sutton believes that Celtic have underperformed when looking at the table.

Walking away from matches this season, particularly the home ones, many fans have been of the opinion that the team deserved something more from the match, losing to Lazio and then drawing with Atletico. Both were good performances from Brendan Rodgers’ side, but they lacked the quality and depth to get over the line.

Speaking on Sky Sports on Thursday, Chris Sutton said, “It was pleasing because it was the first time that Celtic have won a Champions League home game in over 10 years, but that’s it. There was nothing on the game. I’m not going to be getting the bunting out.

“It’s important for the team that they did win it but we can’t get away from the fact that this season in European football, in a pretty gentle group, Celticv haven’t done anywhere near well enough. That’s a concern, but putting that home record right was a step, but a small step.”

Brendan Rodgers is looking to get quality in over the next few windows to get his side competitive in the elite competition.
