Chris Sutton Shares Lennoxtown Latest

As preparations for the Viaplay Cup final continue to build, former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has given his thoughts on the midfield the manager may select.

One area of the park which the Scottish champions are not limited in options in is the midfield although Sutton reckons it’s a straight choice between two players.

Captain Callum McGregor will be a stick on to start the final and will once again be hoping to lift the League Cup as it was the first trophy he won as Celtic captain.

Reo Hatate has been in tremendous form in recent weeks as he has bagged four goals in his last two appearances.

With that in mind, it’s then a straight fight in Sutton’s opinion between Matt O’Riley and Aaron Mooy.

Mooy was left out of the Celtic squad for the Aberdeen fixture after he felt a bit sore but it looks as though he will be available for Ange Postecoglou’s team on Sunday.

Matt O’Riley started the match against the Dons and looked as though he was hungry to impress.

Celtic supporters know that both players are capable but even though O’Riley may be far younger than his Aussie counterpart, he has far more experience in this fixture.

Mooy was expected to return to training this week for the Hoops which would be a huge boost as whether he starts or not, can make a huge impact. Sutton has claimed he’s heard Aaron will be ready.

“In terms of the way the team are playing, the team are playing exceptionally well,” said Sutton speaking on [The Record Celtic Podcast].

“There are options I suppose. There’s doubt over Aaron Mooy.

“All things, which I’m reading at the moment and hearing from Celtic is that, I mean, Ange Postecoglou doesn’t give much away, does he?

“It seems like Aaron Mooy will be fit.

“But even if he’s not, I think O’Riley came in at the weekend and played like he had a point to prove.”

O’Riley managed to bag his first goal of the season in the Scottish Cup tie against St Mirren a couple of weeks ago and remains top of the assists chart having provided 10 assists this season and the manager may just prefer him for his work off the ball.
